Cabinet of curiosities

I'm looking for a glass cabinet right now. I would like a cabinet where I can gather different objects that I collect; taxidermy birds, porcelain dogs, objects bought on trips and so on. I would like to create my own cabinet of curiostity. The original cabinet of curiosities or Kunstkammer emerged in the 16th century and was very popular in Renaissance Europe. Wealthy people created microcosmos or even museums of their own with natural history objects, geology, religious or historical relics and work of art. This type of display of objects has become popular now again and you see a lot of interior pictures inspired of natural history museums or classic 19th century English libraries. It's a trend were ones home should look like one of an old time explorer. I like it a lot, but I'm also aware of the authenticity problem. I think the objects you collect should be real and come from places you actually visited and not just objects you bought in the nearest cool vintage store. I've bought a lot online from for example ebay but I have this idea that for next year I'm only going to buy things when I visit different places in Sweden, for example small towns. In some way I feel that you get a more fair part of the objects history then and if you are lucky you buy it from someone that can tell a story about it's origin.

Here are some nice inspirational pictures of cabinet of curiosity ideas:

Margit Brundin

I found a new ceramist I absolutely adore on my way home from work yesterday. I saw one of her dog lamps in the window of "Konsthantverkarna", a shop at Södermalm, Stockholm. Unfortunatley the shop was closed but I managed to find her lamp online. I visited her homepage and it was filled with amazing animal sculptures. She says that for her, animals holds a certain mystery about them. She likes to build stories around them and fantasies about their thoughts and emotions. I just love the wall hanged animals and the candle holders! I really would like to get one of her pieces!

More is more; Tony Duquette

I found a book I want the other day. It's a book about Tony Duquette. I've never heard about him before I found some pictures on Pinterest. He was an American designer that lived and worked in LA. He designed costumes and settings for movies, interiors, jewellery and special furnishing. He also created interiors for numerous night clubs, public places and private properties. He loved richness, drama, ornament and individuality. His house in Beverly Hills, "Dawnridge" is now a museum. He began to build it in 1949 together with his wife Elisabeth and worked on it for the rest of his life. They created a home that was grandiose and overstated with gilded lilies, leopard patterns, rock crystals and endless rococo paintings. Each space was a pastiche of Duquette's passions: Chinoiserie, gold-leafed trays, Louis XV chairs and Japanese brocades. Judging by the pictures it looks beyond words! It has that special combination of colors and crazy objects that only an eccentric still genius person can put together. I really would like to go there and see it in reality, but in the meantime I'm going to buy the book for my self as a Christmas gift!

Collection of cactuses

It's snowing in Stockholm today and I'm not keen on winter at all right now. I'm dreaming of warm air and exotic places were cactuses can grow....I know I'm like a year to late with this but I've got myself a cactus collection a couple of weeks back. The cactus has been the most trendy plant for a while now, but it took me a while to get one myself. I'm not good with plants, but who can fail with cactuses? Anyway it's nice to look upon them now when it's snow on the roofs outside...

My own collection photographed a week ago when it was still sunny outside...
All flower pots from Uppsala Ekeby.

And some more inspiration pictures of collections of cactuses:
